Fresh from a win at the AHA NSW’s Rockin’ the Puburbs 2023 pub band comp – Sydney rock outfit Wicked Things will kick off a five-stop NSW east coast pub tour at Finnian’s Tavern, Port Macquarie on Friday, 21 April.
A stand-out from some of the best pub-rock talent in NSW, Wicked Things – a band of four brothers, Kaleb Hills (vocals), Cooper Hills (drums), and twins Blade Hills (guitar) and Gericho Hills (bass) impressed the judges – including rock legend and Rose Tattoo front man Angry Anderson.
“As a judge on the night of the battle…Wicked Things won hands down as the best act of the night. I witnessed all the vital ingredients for an outstanding performance; passion, great musical craft, enthusiasm for the task and best of all, showmanship,” Mr Anderson said.
Since forming in 2018, Wicked Things has won the 2019 Soundcheck band comp scoring a European Tour supporting the legendary Dune Rats and released four singles including The Rocker (2021), Oh Yeah (2022), Luci (2022), Stand Up and Shout (2022) and their latest release Hangover (2023).
For winning AHA NSW’s Rockin’ the Puburbs, the band took home a $5000 cash prize and five-stop NSW east coast pub tour. Newly appointed Minister for Night Time Economy & Music, John Graham was on hand to present the award to Wicked Things at Selina’s, Coogee Bay Hotel.
“Live music is woven into the fabric of local pubs and the two have always gone hand-in-hand,” AHA NSW CEO John Whelan said.
“By supporting up-and-coming bands like Wicked Things and providing stages across NSW for them to perform upon, as an organisation we can help secure live music as a fixture in local pubs for decades to come.”
For the band, the tour is an opportunity to showcase their music and engage with new fans.
“Playing pubs is one of the most important parts of being in a band, particularly in Australia,” guitarist Blade Hills said.
“We know for sure this opportunity will allow us to build a bigger fan base, road-test brand new songs, get the locals to enjoy themselves and gain some more stories of our experiences that hopefully one day we can talk about in an interview with Rolling Stone or something wild like that.”
Dates for the tour include:
Friday, 21 April – Finnian’s Tavern, Port Macquarie
Saturday, 22 April – The Coffs Hotel, Coffs Harbour
Tuesday, 25 April – Toronto Hotel supporting The Screaming Jets
Saturday, 29 April – The Sunken Monkey Hotel, Erina
